FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HANTS EAST – Food security in East Hants is being strengthened thanks to new provincial funding from the Houston Government.
A total of $75,000 is being invested through the Feeding Communities Fund to support local initiatives focused on improving food access and community support.
The Feeding Communities Fund is delivering $5.3 million across Nova Scotia, exceeding initial projections, to help organizations provide safe, nutritious food to Nova Scotians experiencing food insecurity. The fund is supported by proceeds from the sale of U.S. alcohol products, with those dollars being redirected back into communities where they can make a direct difference.
Approved projects include:
Caring and Sharing / Angel Tree Food Bank Association – $10,000 for Food for All
Hants North Community Food Bank Association – $10,000 for Food Gift Cards
Shumilacke Food Bank Society – $10,000 for Supplemental Food Funding
Sipekne'katik First Nation – $20,000 for Food Bank for Community
East Hants Community Learning Association – $15,000 for Fields to Families
East Hants Family Resource Centre – $10,000 for Pantry Giveaway Program
“East Hants is made up of growing communities where people look out for one another, and local organizations are doing important work to make sure no one is left behind,” said Hants East MLA John A. MacDonald. “This funding helps ensure those programs can continue to grow, reach more people, and provide reliable support where it is needed most.”
These local recipients are among 315 non-profits and charities across Nova Scotia, including in rural and Mi’kmaw communities, strengthening both established programs and smaller, community-based efforts.
By reinvesting proceeds from U.S. alcohol sales into food security, the Houston Government is helping ensure more Nova Scotians can meet their basic needs and access support close to home.
